GEM™ Steam Traps

Bottling plant

What is a steam metered trial?

A steam metered trial is a data driven assessment method used to accurately quantify steam consumption before and after a system upgrade. By correlating metered steam usage with production output, it establishes a reliable performance benchmark, enabling precise measurement of energy improvements.

In this case study, a steam metered trial was deployed to quantify the impact of replacing conventional mechanical steam traps with GEM™ steam traps at a large U.S. bottling plant.

Overview

This steam metered trial took place at the customer’s bottling plant yielding remarkable savings. As a result, the customer installed a further 4000 GEM traps across their plants globally.

  •  Intensity based steam use reduction of 19.5%
  • Absolute steam use reduction of 14.8%
  • GEM trap replacement date on 10/20/2012
  • Complete data week before retrofit: 10/09/2012 - 10/13/2012
  • Complete data week after retrofit: 11/26/2012 - 11/30/2012
  • Unit volume steam usage: 0.96 lbs/L before retrofit, 0.77 lbs/L after
  • Absolute steam usage: 74,119 lb
