Milk concentration, pasteurization, spray drying, and CIP cycles consume large volumes of steam and hot water. Spray drying alone can account for up to 25% of a dairy’s total energy use, with as much as 90% of that input energy lost to the atmosphere. Combined with boiler stack losses, this represents some 40% to 50% of the site’s purchased energy leaving through boiler and process exhaust stacks.
