Boiler or other exhaust flue gases enter the upper section of the tower, where their energy is recovered to preheat the descending water stream. If the recovered energy is insufficient to meet load requirements, the fully modulating burner in the lower combustion chamber engages, releasing additional combustion energy directly into the water as it passes through stainless steel packing.

The water absorbs both recovered and burner heat before exiting at temperatures up to 85°C. Flue gases are cooled to within 5°C of the inlet water, maximising heat recovery and achieving condensing efficiencies of up to 99%.
