Implementing GEM™ Steam Trap Technology
GEM full venturi steam trap technology delivered with a clear, approachable and proven methodology delivers energy savings and reliability for decades.
GEM full venturi steam trap technology delivered with a clear, approachable and proven methodology delivers energy savings and reliability for decades.
Steam traps operate in hot, pressurised, and often contaminated environments. Conventional mechanical steam traps rely on continuously moving components that wear, foul and corrode over time. This leads to leakage or blockage resulting in live steam losses or impaired condensate removal.
Industry guidance typically cites mechanical steam-trap failure rates as 10 - 15% per year, making regular inspection and replacement unavoidable. Even well-maintained systems therefore experience persistent steam losses and ongoing maintenance costs.
GEM Steam Traps operate on a fundamentally different principle. Using calibrated full venturi technology, they provide continuous condensate removal with no moving parts, eliminating the primary failure mechanisms associated with mechanical designs. For many sites, this represents a step change in how steam systems are managed, shifting from cyclical replacement to long-term performance assurance.
Our engineers work with your team on site to quickly survey your system, as you would during your annual steam trap survey.
Using thermal imaging to assess current trap condition and operational performance, the outcome is a clear and practical report that provides a comprehensive view of your steam system, highlights priority areas for action and sets out the savings available through conversion to GEM Steam Traps.
Where appropriate, our engineers can review your existing survey data and provide an initial, high-level estimate of potential energy savings, project value, and return on investment.
Each GEM Steam Trap is engineered to the load profile of its application, ensuring stable performance and intended energy savings. Thermal Energy International takes responsibility for surveying, sizing, manufacture and commissioning.
A Thermal Energy International steam trap survey provides a full audit of your steam traps. Using our CREST survey tool, information is gathered at each location to assess trap condition and operational performance. The survey concludes with a clear report detailing the percentage of failed traps, along with prioritised recommendations and observations, giving you a comprehensive view of system condition.
The survey provides:
Working with your team, we ensure fuel costs, maintenance costs and operating hours are accurately captured. Using conservative and proven saving assumptions, we build a project case that supports internal CAPEX approval and any additional government funding available in your locality.
Our focus is on providing a clear business case, and producing credible, defensible figures built on agreed assumptions — numbers that withstand both technical review and financial scrutiny.
The resulting report supports:
Sizing is the service.
When you purchase a GEM Trap, you are not buying a generic specification — you are investing in engineered implementation, verified performance, and long-term accountability.
Venturi technology only performs as intended when correctly sized.
If oversized, the condensate seal becomes unstable at low load, allowing live steam to pass and undermining project ROI.
If undersized, condensate backs up into equipment, impairing heat exchange and process performance.
In both cases, uncontrolled mixing of steam and condensate increases the risk of waterhammer, corrosion, and avoidable maintenance.
Every GEM Steam Trap is individually calibrated using site survey data and validated through discussion with operators and OEMs. Where appropriate, we apply at least two independent sizing routes to confirm alignment between calculated load and real operating conditions.
Each trap is engineered for its specific duty and assigned a unique serial number linking it back to the sizing calculation, application data, and manufacturing records.
GEM Steam Traps are commissioned by our engineers under live operating conditions, using thermal imaging and calibrated temperature measurements.
We understand that many steam systems are mature assets, process equipment documentation may be incomplete or modified over time, and equipment does not always operate exactly as originally designed. Where commissioning identifies that further optimisation of sizing is required, we will revise calibration and supply a replacement trap free of charge.
Each trap is then signed off and registered under our ten-year performance guarantee reflecting our responsibility for correct sizing, implementation, and long-term performance.
As plants evolve and operating conditions change, our engineers remain available to provide technical support, training, recalibration, and verification. This ensures performance is sustained over decades, not just at installation.
All GEM Traps are supplied with full installation and maintenance manuals, technical information sheets, and a delivery schedule linking each trap’s serial number to its correct location, tag number and calculated condensate flowrates.
Using our digital survey platform, CREST (Carbon Reduction and Efficiency Scoping Tool) we capture structured, standardised data at each trap location. Photographs and thermal images of every trap creates a visual record of location and condition. This removes ambiguity particularly on large or complex sites and ensures no traps are missed.
Information collected on CREST gives instant area by area, application by application analytics of site condition and highlights area of concerns immediately.
This pressure, process and condition data delivers detailed energy saving, CO2 reduction and payback calculations of the project to support your business decisions.
Finally, CREST information enables accurate sizing and correct calibration of your GEM Traps. As we move through to the commissioning phase of the project, CREST will be used to verify commissioning temperatures log service visit information to provide traceability for the lifetime of your plant.
The entire process — from installation to evaluation and commissioning — was smooth and well-supported. The supplier provided excellent assistance throughout, helping us overcome any challenges.

We’ve had our GEM™ Traps in place for more than five years, with no issues. I inherited them from my predecessor and am impressed that this small piece of kit can make such a big difference. The traps are easy to maintain with a quick strainer he traps are easy to maintain with a quick strainer clean being all that is required.

Once again, the GEM Traps made a significant contribution to the success of this project. We are now carrying out a series of energy saving projects across the site which will result in us replacing all the inverted bucket traps with the GEM Traps

GEM Steam Traps are supplied with a ten-year performance guarantee and installations continue to perform long beyond the guarantee period.
Steam steam systems do not remain static however. Processes evolve, personnel change, and original project knowledge will gradually be lost over time. A scheduled servicing relationship prevents this knowledge erosion and protects your investment.
